The company primarily engages in residential collection operations that include curbside collection of refuse from small containers into collection vehicles for transport to transfer stations or directly to landfills. Its commercial and industrial collection operations include the supply of waste containers of various sizes and rental of compactors to large waste generators, as well as the provision of waste collection services to industrial and construction facilities on contractual basis. In addition, the company provides recycling services to commercial and industrial customers, as well as involves in the curbside collection of residential recyclable waste. As of December 31, 2009, it owned or operated 376 collection companies, 223 transfer stations, 192 solid waste landfills, and 78 recycling facilities within 40 states and Puerto Rico. Republic Services, Inc. was founded in 1996 and is based in Phoenix, Arizona.
